ปายA mountain valley of hot springs, canyons, hammock cafés and slow days.
Pai is a small town in a green valley in Mae Hong Son province, about 135 km from Chiang Mai along a road with 762 curves. It was once a sleepy Shan and Yunnanese market town, then became a favourite of backpackers and Thai weekenders. Today it's a mix of bamboo bungalows, yoga studios, live-music bars, coffee shops and craft stalls, with an easy, creative atmosphere.
The pleasures are simple: soak in a natural hot spring, watch the sun set over Pai Canyon, swim beneath a waterfall, ride a scooter through rice paddies or linger in a riverside café. A walking street fills the town centre every evening with food and crafts.
Come between November and February, when the days are warm and the nights cool. From February to April, burning fills the valley with smoke, so check the air before you plan a trip.

Pai travel tips.
Burning season
From February to April, smoke from agricultural burning can be severe. Check air-quality apps and consider visiting another time of year.
Temple etiquette
Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes before entering halls, keep your head lower than monks and Buddha images, and never climb on or pose disrespectfully with statues.
Scooter safety
Pai's roads are hilly and accident rates are high. Only rent if you're experienced, wear a helmet and carry licence and insurance.
Ethical elephants
Look for sanctuaries with no riding, shows or chains.
Keep your cool (jai yen)
Staying calm and smiling solves most problems in Thailand; raised voices lose face for everyone.
