GET TO KNOW KRABI

Limestone cliffs, emerald water and islands you reach by longtail boat.

Krabi is the Andaman Sea at its most dramatic: sheer limestone karsts rising from turquoise water, hidden lagoons, mangrove creeks and some of the world's best rock climbing. It's a province rather than a single resort, so you choose a base: Ao Nang for beach life and boat trips, Railay for cliffs and quiet sand, Krabi Town for local flavour, or the islands of Phi Phi and Koh Lanta.

The landscape is the attraction. Longtail boats carry you to beaches with no roads, sea kayaks slip through mangrove tunnels, and inland there are waterfalls, jungle pools, hot springs and a hilltop temple with more than a thousand steps. The Andaman coast has a pronounced monsoon, so timing matters: the best weather is November to April.

Southern Thai culture is distinct here. Krabi has a large Muslim community, and the food is bolder and spicier than in the north or Bangkok, with roti, massaman curry and fresh seafood.

A LITTLE LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

Krabi travel tips.

A mixed community

Krabi has large Buddhist and Muslim communities. Dress modestly in villages, avoid eating pork in front of Muslim hosts and be aware of prayer times and Ramadan.

Temple etiquette

Cover shoulders and knees at temples such as Wat Tham Suea, remove shoes before entering halls and respect monks.

Respect the reefs

Don't touch coral, stand on it or take shells. Use reef-safe sunscreen, and don't feed the fish.

Wild monkeys

Macaques at Tiger Cave Temple and Railay snatch food and bags. Keep things zipped away and don't feed them.

Southern food

Expect heat: curries are spicy and salty. Say “mai phet” for not spicy, or “phet nit noi” for a little spicy.

Keep your cool (jai yen)

Staying calm and smiling solves most problems in Thailand.
