หัวหินA royal seaside town of night markets, golf, vineyards and calm beaches.
Hua Hin is the country's oldest beach resort. In the 1920s the royal family built a summer palace here, and the town's red-and-white railway pavilion, long sandy beach and cool sea breezes made it a fashionable retreat for Bangkok's elite. It's still a favourite with Thai families and retirees, and with visitors who want easier-going beach days than Phuket or Pattaya.
The pace is relaxed. Days are for the beach, golf courses, spas, cycling and cafés; evenings for the night market, seafood on the pier and live music. Around the town are vineyards, a water park, art markets and a Greek-themed park, while Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park's caves and wetlands are a day trip south.
The Gulf coast here is drier than the Andaman side, so Hua Hin has pleasant weather for much of the year, though the sea is rougher from September to November.

Hua Hin travel tips.
Royal town
Hua Hin's palaces remain royal residences and are not open to the public. Respect signs and avoid photographing guards and grounds.
Temple etiquette
Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes before entering halls, keep your head lower than monks and Buddha images, and never climb on or pose disrespectfully with statues.
Monkey Mountain
The macaques at Khao Takiab are used to people but grab food, sunglasses and bags. Keep things zipped and don't feed them.
Beach horses
Horse riding on the beach is popular, but some horses are poorly cared for. Choose a reputable operator, and avoid the hottest hours.
Keep your cool (jai yen)
Staying calm and smiling solves most problems in Thailand; raised voices lose face for everyone.
